Pongwe lies on Unguja's east coast between Kiwengwa and Uroa, about 46km (roughly an hour's drive) from Stone Town. Its turquoise water is sheltered by a protective coral reef that keeps the bay calm and forms a natural swimming area, though at high tide the beach can be cut off from the surrounding coastline. Compared with the busier beaches at Nungwi and Kendwa, Pongwe remains quiet and lightly developed, with Pongwe Beach Hotel (23 rooms) as its main accommodation.
