About
A fishing village and beach on Unguja's central east coast, on the shore of the mangrove-fringed Chwaka Bay near the boundary of Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, with an economy based mainly on fishing, seaweed farming and a small tourism sector.
Chwaka is a historic Swahili settlement on Unguja's central east coast, directly across the island from Zanzibar City, fronting the mangrove-lined Chwaka Bay. It sits at the edge of Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, the island's main protected forest and mangrove reserve, and is listed among Zanzibar's historic Swahili city-state settlements. Today the village's economy rests mainly on fishing, seaweed farming and a modest tourism trade.
