About
A coastal village on Unguja's central east coast roughly midway between Kiwengwa and Chwaka, with a sheltered bay used by local fishing boats alongside a small tourism sector.
Uroa is a small village on Unguja's central east coast in Uroa Bay, about 22 miles north of Zanzibar Town and roughly midway between Kiwengwa and Chwaka. Traditionally reliant on fishing and seaweed farming, the village has seen tourism grow since 2008; seaweed farmers there earn around $7 a month compared with roughly $65 for those working in tourism. Uroa remains sparsely developed, strung out along the shoreline with only a handful of shops, and is reached from Stone Town by dala-dala or public bus.
