About
A long stretch of white-sand beach on Unguja's northeast coast fronted by a lagoon, coral reef and the small atoll of Mnemba; the village's economy is based mainly on seaweed farming and fishing alongside tourism.
Matemwe sits in Kaskazini A District on Unguja's northeast coast, between the villages of Mwangaseni and Kigomani, with a long white-sand beach fronting a lagoon, coral reef and the Mnemba Atoll just offshore - a popular dive and snorkel site known for giant trevallies, trumpetfish, groupers and snappers. Alongside seaweed farming and fishing, the community runs small enterprises such as the Dada cooperative, which makes handmade cosmetics, jam and sweets sold in Stone Town, and hosts the Tamani Foundation charitable school.
