About

A small privately-leased island roughly 3km off Unguja's northeast coast, ringed by a 2,130-hectare marine conservation area of fringing reef that is one of Zanzibar's best-known dive and snorkelling sites; a breeding ground for green turtles and a seasonal feeding area for dolphins and whale sharks.

Mnemba Island is a small triangular island around 500 metres across, ringed by an oval reef roughly 7km by 4km that forms the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area (MIMCA). The area is managed jointly by government authorities, local fishing communities and conservation partners, and protects four distinct marine habitats supporting an estimated 600 species of reef fish. It is a nesting ground for threatened green sea turtles and a habitat used by three dolphin species, with a Marine Special Area designation adding extra protection against overfishing and reef damage.
