About
Zanzibar's only national park, protecting the largest remaining area of indigenous forest on Unguja and home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey; managed by Zanzibar's Department of Forestry and Non-Renewable Natural Resources.
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park forms the core of a wider UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve and protects a mosaic landscape of tropical forest, mangroves, coral rag forest, groundwater forest and salt marsh. It is the last stronghold of the Zanzibar red colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii), an endemic monkey named after 19th-century British Resident Sir John Kirk, whose population within the park is estimated at around 1,000 individuals. Since the mid-1990s the red colobus has served as Zanzibar's flagship conservation species, drawing conservation funding and tourism to the park alongside its Sykes' monkeys, bushbabies and mangrove boardwalk.
