About

A public bathhouse built 1870-1888 for Sultan Barghash bin Said in Persian architectural style, used by both men and women (at different hours) until 1920; restored in 2006 and now open to visitors as one of Stone Town's landmark buildings.

Commissioned by Sultan Barghash bin Said and built by the Iranian architect Haji Gulam Hussein, the Hamamni Persian Baths were Zanzibar's first public bathhouse, comprising hot and cold bathing rooms, toilets, shaving areas and a restaurant supplied with hot water via underground aqueducts. An entrance fee meant only wealthier Zanzibaris used the baths regularly, and separate hours were set for men and women. No longer functioning as baths, the complex was restored in 2006 by volunteers from the CHAM heritage association and is now open to visitors.
