About

A mosque on the southern tip of Unguja bearing a kufic inscription dated 1107 CE, making it among the oldest surviving Islamic buildings on the East African coast; rebuilt substantially in the 18th century and still in use for prayer.

Despite its name, the Kizimkazi Mosque actually stands in Dimbani village, about 4.8km from Kizimkazi itself, at the southern tip of Unguja. A floriated kufic inscription beside the mihrab records that it was commissioned by Sheikh Said bin Abi Amran Mfaume al Hassan bin Muhammad in the Islamic month of Dhul Kaadi in the year 500 AH, corresponding to 1107 CE, making it one of the oldest surviving Islamic buildings on the East African coast. While that inscription and some coral-carved decorative elements date to the original construction, most of today's structure was rebuilt in the 18th century, and the mosque remains in active use for prayer.
