About

A hexagonal, domed museum building on Creek Road built in 1925 by British architect J.H. Sinclair as a First World War peace memorial; most of its historic collection has since moved to the House of Wonders, and the building now functions mainly as a library.

Beit-el-Amani ('House of Peace') was opened on Armistice Day 1925 by Sultan Khalifa bin Haroub as Zanzibar's memorial to those who died in the First World War. Designed by British colonial architect J.H. Sinclair, its whitewashed hexagonal plan features arabesque windows and a large central dome flanked by six smaller domes at each point of the hexagon. Its collection once covered slavery, archaeology, trade and colonial history, most of which has since transferred to the House of Wonders.
