About

Malindi Mosque is a Zanzibar historic site associated with historic mosque, architecture.

Malindi Mosque, also known as Bamnara Mosque, stands in the Malindi neighbourhood of Stone Town near the old port. The present building was constructed in 1250 AH (1834-35 CE) by Muhammad ben Abdulkadir al-Mansaby, a wealthy merchant originally from the Benadir coast in present-day Somalia, and was subsequently expanded in 1841 and again in 1890; some accounts suggest an earlier mosque, possibly dating to the 17th century or before, may have stood on the same site. The mosque is architecturally distinctive for its cone-shaped minaret set on a square platform โ€” one of only three minarets of this particular conical shape known in East Africa โ€” built in the Swahili architectural tradition. It remains an active mosque today.
