About

The former residence of the Zanzibari sultan's family on the Stone Town seafront, built in the late 19th century to replace an earlier palace destroyed in the 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War; renamed the People's Palace after the 1964 revolution and used as government offices until it was converted into a museum of the sultans' history in 1994.

Originally built between 1827 and 1834 for Sultan Said bin Sultan, the palace was largely demolished by British naval bombardment during the 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War and rebuilt soon after in its present late-19th-century form. Inside, one floor is dedicated to the long-reigning Sultan Khalifa bin Harub, and another to Princess Salme, later known as Emily Ruete, who eloped with a German merchant and became one of the first East African women to publish an autobiography.
