About
A mobile network operator serving Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, part of the Millicom/Tigo group, offering mobile, data and fixed telecom services.
Zantel began as Zanzibar's own mobile network, historically strong on the islands but with little mainland coverage, before expanding into mainland Tanzania in 2005. In 2015 Millicom International Cellular acquired an 85% stake in Zantel from the Etisalat Group, with the Government of Zanzibar retaining the remaining 15%. Zantel was later combined with Millicom's mainland operator, Tigo Tanzania, before Millicom exited the Tanzanian market entirely, selling both businesses to an Axian-led consortium and ending Millicom's presence in Africa.
