About

One of Zanzibar's oldest spice-tour farms, in Kizimbani village near Dole in the Zanzibar Urban/West region; clove cultivation here dates to the 1830s under Sultan Said bin Sultan, and the government-maintained plantation today runs guided walking tours through cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and cocoa for visitors.

Kizimbani village, around 20km from Stone Town, was where Sultan Said bin Sultan first established large-scale clove cultivation on Zanzibar in the 1830s, seeding the island's reputation as the 'Spice Island'. The government-run plantation here covers roughly 10 acres and today combines cloves with nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and cocoa. Guides lead walking tours through the plantation explaining how each spice is grown and harvested, and tours typically end with a tasting of fresh tropical fruit and a spice-based Zanzibari meal.
