Menai Bay Conservation Area

About
Zanzibar's largest marine protected area at roughly 470 square kilometres, off Unguja's southwest coast near Fumba and Kizimkazi; established in 1997 to stop dynamite fishing and protect its fringing reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves, home to dolphins and sea turtles.
Menai Bay Conservation Area was formally established in August 1997 in response to declining fish stocks from dynamite fishing and overexploitation of the bay's reefs. Alongside its coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves, the bay is one of the few places on Zanzibar's coast with resident dolphin populations: the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin are both found here year-round with high site fidelity, making dolphin-watching trips out of nearby Kizimkazi one of the area's best-known activities.
