About

Stone Town's main public market on Creek Road, built in 1904 for Sultan Ali bin Hamud and still the city's principal produce, spice and fish market.

Darajani's main building was constructed in 1904 by Bomanjee Maneckjee for Sultan Ali bin Hamud, on the site of a market established in the 1880s after the closure of Stone Town's former slave market nearby. It is also known as Estella Market, after Countess Estella, sister of Zanzibar's British-era prime minister Lloyd Mathews, and colloquially as Marikiti Kuu ('main market' in Swahili). The whitewashed, colonial-style building with its ornate corrugated-iron roof stands opposite the Anglican Cathedral of Christ and today functions chiefly as a food market, with stalls selling seafood, meat, fruit, grains and spices alongside clothing and electronics.
