About

An Anglican cathedral completed in 1879 by British missionaries on the site of East Africa's last operating slave market, closed in 1873; the high altar stands over the former whipping post.

Christ Church Cathedral was built by the Universities Mission to Central Africa under the abolitionist Bishop Edward Steere, with its foundation laid on Christmas Day 1873 and construction completed by Christmas 1879. It stands on the site of Zanzibar's last operating slave market, which closed in 1873, and its high altar was deliberately positioned over the former whipping post, giving it the name 'Slave Market Church.' Designed by C. Forster Hayward in a Saracenic style that blends Zanzibari, Middle Eastern and late Victorian Gothic influences, the cathedral is regarded internationally as a symbol of emancipation.
