About

Chapwani Island is a Zanzibar island associated with island, historic cemetery.

Chapwani Island, also known as Grave Island, is a small coral island in the Zanzibar Channel a short boat ride off Stone Town, measuring about 0.7 km by 0.1 km. It is best known for a British naval cemetery, including a Commonwealth War Graves Commission plot commemorating servicemen who died while serving in Zanzibar, among them casualties of the 1914 attack by the German cruiser SMS Konigsberg on the British protected cruiser HMS Pegasus. The earliest recorded burial dates to 1847, though most graves are from the 1870s onward. The island is privately owned and home to Hadimu residents; there is no landing stage, so visitors typically wade ashore.
